Across Slovenia, Italy, Montenegro and Albania, the 4PETHABECO Living Labs follow a common participatory methodology while remaining flexible enough to respond to the specific ecological, social and economic conditions of each territory. Based on the Living Lab and Quadruple Helix approaches, the process brings together public authorities, researchers, businesses, civil society organisations and local communities as active partners in defining problems, sharing knowledge and co-creating practical solutions for human–large carnivore coexistence. Each Living Lab begins with a review of the local context, including ecological evidence, legislation, governance arrangements, cultural attitudes, livelihoods, ongoing initiatives and stakeholder relationships. This baseline is used to identify needs, gaps and opportunities and to develop a shared vision among participants. Stakeholders then take part in a structured process of co-design, using workshops, round tables, field visits, participatory mapping, scenario-building and other accessible facilitation tools to compare scientific knowledge with local experience and jointly develop ideas, services, governance models or communication initiatives.
